Already trusted among the world’s largest kitchen operators for quickly and reliably detecting and extinguishing fires, the ANSUL R-102 has now received certification from BSI as an EN 17446 approved kitchen extinguishing system.
The EN 17446 standard sets forth stringent criteria for kitchen fire extinguishing systems, encompassing a wide range of safety measures designed to protect both life and property. To become an EN 17446 approved kitchen extinguishing system, R-102 underwent a unified, multiple-phase process in which its fire-extinguishing capability was vigorously tested on numerous grease-vapour-producing appliances.

R-102 is EN 16282-7 compliant, ensuring hardware and system quality in fixed fire suppression. EN 17446 now provides comprehensive requirements and detailed test protocols for various commercial kitchen appliances with distinct risk factors. Tests, including fire extinguishing, splash, hood and air extract duct extinguishing, plenum extinguishing, and agent distribution, must be conducted by an accredited independent testing laboratory under EN ISO/IEC 17025.
With the new certification, R-102 can add to its already impressive list of top industry recognitions for safety and compliance, including:
Kitchen fires remain a significant risk, making R-102 a crucial investment with its proven ability to sustain operations post-fire, even leading to insurance discounts in some cases. While other fire suppression solutions may claim EN 17446 approval, it’s vital to verify all documentation for restaurant and patron safety.
Adhering to EN 17446 assures European restaurant operators of a reliable fire protection system, providing peace of mind. With Johnson Controls’ global support, the R-102 system stands out as the intelligent choice for European restaurant safety.

Appliance-specific design aims nozzles at specific hazard areas while overlapping design creates a continuous zone of protection for a group of appliances.
Extremely effective ANSULEX agent quickly knocks down flames while generating a vapor-securing blanket that minimizes re-flash without toxic by-products.
R-102 is cartridge-operated, which is easier to service and reduces leakage while the agent is easy to clean with water or steam if discharged.
R-102 is one of the only restaurant fire suppression systems to be BSI certified to the EN 17446 standard in Europe.
A liquid grease fire 25mm deep in a cast iron skillet was allowed to burn freely at maximum intensity for two minutes on a burner location determined most difficult to achieve extinguishment. To pass the range test, R-102 had to extinguish the flames and not allow re-ignition of the grease for 20 minutes.
With liquid grease 100mm deep in a stainless steel pot, the appliance was heated at maximum intensity. After both auto-ignition and grease temperature exceeded 363 C, the fire continued to burn for two minutes until R-102 was manually actuated.
On sheet metal at least 2 mm thick, approximately 6 mm of oil was heated until auto-ignition. Following full surface flames, 60 seconds had to pass after free-burn, then the heat source was disconnected, and the R-102 actuation sequence began.
Low-quality fatty beef steaks are placed on a thick plastic sheet with 6 mm of semi-solid grease. After flames are at least 600 mm high, the fire burns for one minute. Among the requirements for EN 17446, the system must immediately lower the flame and then has one minute to extinguish the fire.
